―Unidentified Shadowman[src]

The Shadowmen were a group of powerful[1] wizards[2] or shamans[3] who created the first Slayer by empowering a girl named Sineya with the essence of a demon.[4]

History

During the Primordium Age, the Shadowmen selected a young girl named Sineya to fight against the forces of evil. They chained her in a cave and infused her with the "heart" and "spirit" of a demon. At the cost of much of her humanity, the First Slayer was created.[4]

Sineya was granted superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, agility, and accelerated healing — powers that enabled her to banish the Old Ones and defeat demons and vampires. After her death, her spirit continued to appear in the dreams and visions of her successors.[5]

Unlike subsequent Slayers, Sineya did not have a Watcher[6] and operated in solitude, isolated from the community she protected.[5] Later, the descendants of the Shadowmen, together with their apprentices, founded the Watchers Council. This organization assumed responsibility for locating, training, and guiding Slayers and Potential Slayers, thereby ensuring the ongoing fight against evil.[7]

In 2003, Buffy Summers attempted to communicate with the Shadowmen from Sunnydale by using a mystical set of shadow casters, eventually encountering them through a temporal portal spell. They offered to grant Buffy additional power by repeating the original ritual that had created the First Slayer, infusing her with demonic essence. Buffy refused, unwilling to sacrifice her humanity for more power as Sineya had. Before returning her, the Shadowmen gave Buffy a vision of the First Evil's horde of Turok-Han, leaving her uncertain as to whether she had made the right choice.[4]

Legacy

In addition to creating the First Slayer, the Shadowmen were responsible for establishing the Slayer line and the mystical forces governing its activation. They also created the Potential Slayers, though traditionally only one from each generation was chosen. In 2003, Buffy Summers and Willow Rosenberg altered these rules by casting the Slayer activation spell,[1] which activated multiple Potentials worldwide, transforming them into full Slayers simultaneously.[8]
