Merl was a parasite demon who frequented Caritas and an informant to the Angel Investigations team.[1]
Biography
Wesley, who had used Merl's services as an informant before,[2] introduced the demon to Angel. Merl got on Angel's bad side when he tricked him into killing Kamal, the bodyguard for a woman whose unborn baby was destined to become a great force of good, with the intent to cash in on the bounty for Jo's death.[3]
Angel continued to use Merl for information about Darla and Drusilla. One night, Angel hung Merl upside down in a sewer and not let him go.[4] Instead of just giving Merl monetary payment, Angel physically and verbally abused him.[5] Because of this, Merl soon grew to dislike and avoid the vampire.[1]
Afterward, Merl demanded an apology, but Angel's initial attempt to apologize went poorly. When Angel visited his home the next day with a box of donuts, he found that Merl had been murdered by Gio, a demon hunter and a member of Gunn's old crew.[6]
Behind the scenes
- He was portrayed by Matthew James.
- Merl also plays a part in the non-canon novel Image, when Angel Investigations recruit his assistance to try and investigate a tabloid magazine using demons to acquire incriminating photos of their subjects. Merl briefly tries to steal the photos from the magazine and use them for himself, but Angel catches him and forces Merl to return the photos.
